Workin' At It
Mar 21, 2025
You know my job, baby? I know you don't know a lot of the ins-and-outs, but there's one thing, one aspect of it that I do think you should know.
See, sometimes we're faced with a problem, and it looks insurmountable. But, we can't let a whole entire project go just because one part of it doesn't work how it's supposed to.
Now… I'm not unique there, not anymore anyways, so this gets spread around a bit more than it used to, but… when one of those problems arises? You wanna know who they go to, a lot of the time?
Me.
Not because I'm particularly smart, or fast, or whatever. Not because I'm exceptionally good at what I do, though I am pretty ok at it. But, no. I realized, somewhere along the way, that those aren't why I get called on.
I get called on because I don't give up.
I will happily bash my head against a problem, endlessly, slowly chipping away at it, eroding the edges, gradually breaking it down into something manageable. And it might take days, or weeks, or sometimes even months… but… I keep at it. I get frustrated, sure. I blow my top. I grab the occasional lunch beer. I step back for a day or two.
But I always solve it. Or nearly so. I can only think of one example where I didn't, and that ended up being because something outside of our control was so hopelessly broken that there was no possible workaround. And, even then, I provided a clear blueprint for how it could be fixed. Never mind that the blueprint was sent on to the partner in question and they seemingly just tossed it straight into the recycle bin. I solved it. Not my fault there's no moving one of the biggest companies in the world.
So, anyways. I know you see me, but I also know there are limitations, for now, so you can't see all of me, not yet. But, you will. One day. Those things standing in our way? They're getting chipped away, eroding at the edges, gradually being broken down. And one day, soon, there won't be anything but air between us. And moments after that, there won't be anything between us at all.
Workin' at it, babe. Always, always workin' at it.
Yours.
